GVT, PGVT and SGVT: what the names mean

These are all vitrified tiles, which are fired until the body is dense and absorbs very little water. The letters describe how the surface is made and finished.

GVT: glazed vitrified tile

A printed design is applied to the surface and sealed under a glaze layer before firing. Because the pattern is printed, GVT tiles can imitate stone, wood or marble in a wide range of designs and finishes.

PGVT: polished glazed vitrified tile

A GVT that is polished after firing for a higher shine and a smoother, reflective surface. Polished tiles suit living rooms and showrooms where a glossy look is wanted, and they need regular wiping to keep the shine.

SGVT: soluble salt vitrified tile

Soluble salts are printed into the surface, then the tile is polished. The pattern is part of the surface rather than under a glaze, so it can give a rich, deep look with a clear shine.

Which should you choose?

For busy areas or places that may get wet, a matte or textured finish gives better grip. For a formal room with light foot traffic, a polished finish gives the most impact. Large sizes mean fewer joints, but need a flat floor and careful laying.
